On Saturday, January 2nd, Paul D. Moore, loving husband and father of two passed away at the age of 91. Paul was born on August 1, 1929, to Volney and Sophia (Weber) Moore in Mt Vernon, MO. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO where he was the MIAA double’s tennis champion, and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. He served in the military for two years and went on to teach English, Speech, Debate, and Drama in high school at Purdy and Joplin, MO. He then taught at Jefferson College in Hillsboro where he went on to become the Dean of Arts and Sciences from 1968 until his retirement in 1989.
Beyond his career in education, Paul was an active member of the local community participating in the Economic Program Development Committee for Jefferson County starting in 1968 and serving as President for three years which helped to create many jobs in the area. He was heavily involved in forming Community Cablevision Inc. in 1980, serving six years as that organization’s president bringing the first cable television service to Jefferson County. Paul was a member of the Hillsboro Park Board from 1977-1997, serving as president for eight years and in that capacity was responsible for the creation of Hillsboro City Park. He was also an active member and past president of the Hillsboro Rotary Club. He also served as a Deacon for Hillsboro First Baptist Church for the past eighteen years.
He married the love of his life LoVella Iris Truhitte of Cassville, MO on May 19, 1957. Together they raised two children; Tracy Martin (Dave) of St. Louis, MO, and Scott Moore (Jennifer Robin) of Nashville, TN. With his family, he shared his love of camping, boating, fishing, sports, theater, fine woodworking, and horticulture. His fishing skills were always on display and many had the opportunity to marvel at his custom, meticulous dollhouse and birdhouse creations.
Paul is preceded in death by his father and mother and survived by his wife of 63 years, two children, his brother Hugh Moore, sister Mary Bacher, grandchildren: Jennifer, Drew, Tori, Erin, Kristen and Alec, and seven great-grandchildren: Rylie, Nathan, JP, Henry, Remi, Lena, and Reese.
